Wanting to change or improve ourselves is natural; we may all be aware of areas in our lives where we would like to be different, do things differently, have more confidence or make improvements. We may have an idea of what attributes we would like to have or change and some idea of where we are now and where we would like to be. It could be that we make the decision, that there are some things in life, which, we are no longer willing to accept or indignities that we are no longer willing to suffer.
However, knowing that there are things we could change is one thing - having the courage and confidence to change is another. Some people may feel that changing and seeking help to change, is admitting defeat or a sign of weakness. Nothing could be further from the truth, seeking to change is an act of courage and a sign of mental strength and good mental health.
People often see me because they are going through changes in their personal or professional lives and need confidence or help to adapt and cope with the demands of their new reality. We all have our ups and downs, the difficulty is when our conditions or the environment changes but we have trouble adapting to them. It could be changes such a promotion, demotion, redundancy or a change of career or personal relationships. We all need the ability to adapt and evolve; this is key to our survival and happiness.
In their personal lives, people may become aware of things they would like to differently, have more confidence with or be more effective at, such as relationships, family and social concerns. Some people may have had a difficulty or anxiety for a long time including behavioural or emotional difficulties. Often people may be anxious or worried about certain situations in their lives.
A key point is that we may over estimate a perceived threat to our well-being, self-esteem, careers or relationships. There may be a miss match between what we perceive is happening in the outside world and how we interpret the threats and demands in our inner world. We may make assumptions and inferences about others, the world, or ourselves that are unhelpful and blocking us from our aims and objectives.
We all have areas in our lives that we would like to improve or where we lack confidence. We may need to make changes, move outside our comfort zones; increase our mental toughness, resilience and confidence to take on new challenges and cope more effectively with the demands of life.
Who am I...and what am I going to do?
There are two major questions that we can ask ourselves each morning: Who am I and what am I going to do with my life? The answers are not always easy but we are all ultimately responsible for our responses to these vital questions. We all face changes, choices and decisions throughout our lives - some are welcome, others are not, but we cannot avoid choosing. It is through the choices we make and the actions we take, that we discover ourselves; our strengths and weaknesses, who we are, and who we can become, as well as our purpose and place within the world.
Committing to Action
I use the coaching process to enable you to take stock of where you are currently in life and then assist you in exploring new directions, making plans and taking action. By engaging with life's ordeals, by choosing action rather than avoidance; we can find the courage to live life more deliberately; with passion and purpose. In our commitment to action, we find meaning and make sense of life and living; we find our mission in life. In taking action, we rediscover our freedom, choice and responsibility for life and living. In taking action, we take back control of our lives.
In the final analysis, we are our actions; we are known and remembered by what we've done rather than what we didn't do. In the same way that a great playwright is known for the plays he wrote rather than the one's he didn't.
Change and Reinvention
Throughout our lives we all need to assess where we are, and how we fit in with the ever-changing world around us. The world changes and so does our place within it. For example, at times we will be healthy and at other times less so, or rich and poor, in a relationship or single, employed or unemployed, ultimately life moves on and we all get older. To face life's challenges and changing realities, we need to adjust and reinvent ourselves. If the environment changes and we do not adapt to it, then life gets harder and makes less sense to us, as we struggle to find our place in the world. In short; nothing lasts and we all need to adapt and advance.
During times of change, it is beneficial to have the assistance of another human being, to help us gain insight and perspective. Within the coaching process, I assist you in stepping outside of life's situations in order to examine and reflect upon your choices and options, so that you can set goals and take action.
Having worthwhile goals that stretch our abilities, increases our sense of self-reliance, and confidence in order to face future challenges in life with resilience. Having commitments and goals in our lives is vital to our happiness. Our commitments and goals give us our inner compass and a direction to follow. Goals provide us with meaning to our existence and a mechanism whereby we change and develop into better human beings.
Change and development often involve stepping outside of our comfort zones and perceived limits. We all prefer to be comfortable, but all comfort zones become uncomfortable in the end because nothing lasts and conditions change. In facing our discomfort and anxiety head-on and looking life squarely in the eye, we can find opportunity in adversity and possibility in uncertainty. By taking sensible risks we can experience anxiety as excitement and exhilaration rather than fear. Not taking risks; is the greatest risk of all. Living a safe life; can be the most dangerous life of all.
Let the past, stay in the past
The coaching process can be invigorating and exhilarating; we are more concerned with the present and future, rather than the past. We all have a past but we don't have to be the past; we all have memories but we don't have to be the memories. Coaching is more about who we can be - who we want to be and decide to be. As human beings we are free to take a stand against life's conditions, whether it's our environment, background, culture or our genes. We chose our attitude towards the world and we are responsible for our own lives, rather than viewing ourselves as victims of circumstance. If we have grown tired of our old patterns of thinking, behaving and being, if we have outgrown our old attitudes to life and living, then it is within our power and influence to change them.

CBT and REBT Coaching involve looking at our thoughts, and beliefs and the resulting consequences to our emotions, behaviour, actions and physiology. Our thinking and beliefs regarding ourselves, other people and the world impact our actions and the goals we set ourselves. If our thinking is restricted, then we are constrained in our actions and what we can achieve in life. This affects our self-belief and our confidence to engage fully with the challenges of living and everyday life.

Existential Coaching and Philosophy takes into consideration our perspectives within the givens of existence and the contingencies of life, such as freedom, solitude, relationships, meaning in life, aging and death. Within coaching we can seek some deeper meaning to the bigger questions that life throws at us, such as "What's it all for and what does it mean?", "What am I doing with my life and what do I want?", "Who am I and who do I want to be?", What do I value and how do I fit in?". I believe that at its heart, Mental Toughness is Existential Toughness; facing the challenges, absurdities and limits of life with courage, in order to find meaning and purpose in existence.
Coaching in person
One to one coaching sessions can be held at my London consulting rooms at Harley Street and Kensington or alternatively at your office or other agreed venue. Sessions usually last for 90 minutes.
Coaching by Telephone or Skype
An initial session in person is preferable before continuing with telephone sessions; of course this will not always be possible for long-distance or international clients. Telephone sessions are usually 60 minutes.
Please note within the coaching framework you need to be emotionally and mentally robust. If this is not the case, then I can refer you to a suitable therapist.
